Nicole Richie denies that she suffers from anorexia, despite her dramatic weight loss
Nicole Richie can’t seem to get herself out of the spotlight these days. From a dramatic weight loss that ignited rumors of her suffering from anorexia, to her partying out on the town, the girl seems to be a paparazzi magnet.
This time she is denying rumors, yet again, about suffering from an eating disorder. In the past year, she has lost an extreme amount of weight and has been photographed in minimal clothing with her bones jutting dangerously from her skeletal frame.
The star of A Simple Life, with sometime friend Paris Hilton, and has recently been reported to have collapsed on set. Citing dehydration, she has tried in vain to quench rumors that she fell due to malnutrition.
She tells OK! Mag that she was upset about the incident and the way the media grabbed onto the story as if it were a big deal. She was tired and went to hospital for about 10 minutes because there was no on-set Doctor, is all she has commented on.
Regarding the ever-present rumors about her eating disorder, she said: "I don't care about any other rumor except the one that I have an eating disorder. That really bothers me because there are people who truly have eating disorders and it is a serious disease. To put that title on someone when it is not true is disrespectful." (OK! Mag, 2007)
Nicole also commented on the allegations that she takes diet drugs. She remarked that it’s America who is weight obsessed, not her. She quotes headlines that say “[This person] has an eating disorder” and “How to lose 5 pounds in 10 days,” as the reason that so many people are focused on diet and body image.
The report that Nicole had had gastric bypass surgery was laughed at, as she said that the tabloid magazines also say that as soon as she gains any weight, they say the operation has been reversed.
With all of the media attention on her, Nicole has tried in vain to stick up for herself. But she has yet to make a strong case for herself that she is living a healthy life that includes eating enough food.
As a role model for millions of young and older women alike, she is setting a grotesque example of getting attention because of being skinny. Not that that’s entirely her fault, she’s given more attention than she deserves, but the whirlwind that surrounds her is making her into an icon for pro-anorexic girls who look up to her as an ideal of perfection.
How sick is that?
