» CeliaAfter - Gisele's response to new BMI requirements

I just read the little piece quoting Gisele Bundchen. I'm not surprised, though terribly irritated by Gisele's lack of sensitivity to the power of the fashion industry. Children are bombarded by images, constantly, that suggest they are better off as anything but themselves--that they are never good enough. She says it's up to the parents to give children a firm foundation. This is true, but it does take a village and our American township is constantly throwing stones at our young girls. And why do so many adult women suffer now? Why are so many women who never had a problem as children, who were loved, now feeling a lack of self-worth? I wonder. I personally believe that anorexia is a social disorder that, lacking treatment, develops into a vicious disease. I recently finished an advanced copy (I have friends in publishing) of a new book about the causes, effects and the long-road during and after recovery. It's called Gaining, by Aimee Liu. It's beautifully written. Liu has incredible personal story. Any woman, including Gisele, who wants to challenge the FACT that the fashion world attacks young girls should take a minute and read a few personal stories...Liu's book would cover a lot of ground for Gisele. Liu speaks of her own ongoing recovery and interviews a dozen other women and girls. It's inspiring and insightful. I hope that Gisele will settle down in her miracle bra and take a minute to read a truly revelatory book.
